British Adam Yates took victory on the last climb of the third stage of the Volta a Catalunya to take the lead in the overall standings.

Heading into the final five kilometers, Ineos Grenadiers driver Yates was part of a three-man breakaway alongside Sepp Kuss of Jumbo-Visma and Alejandro Valverde of Movistar.

American Kuss and Yates then pulled away, with the British attacking again for a solo run on the final climb.

Yates finished 13 seconds ahead of Colombian Esteban Chaves (Team BikeExchange), who leapt forward to finish second, while Geraint Thomas finished fourth behind Valverde.

It was Yates’ first win since joining the Ineos Grenadiers and his second at the same finish at the top after the 2019 race when he finished second.

“It feels really good,” he said.

‘We had to keep the breakaway under control, they gained a lot of time, we had to close the gap before the bottom of the climb, but it’s a long, really tough climb.

‘We knew that even if they had a couple of minutes at the bottom we could bring him back and in the end everything was perfect.

‘It’s my first win for my new team and I’m really happy.’

In the overall standings, Yates has a 45-second lead over teammate Richie Porte ahead of another mountain stage on Thursday, which ends at Porte Aine.

Joao Almeida (Deceuninck-Quick-Step) dropped to third, with Thomas now fourth, 53 seconds behind team-mate Ineos.
